What You Can Learn From Hitting “End of Life” On Your Website or WordPress Platform

Websites get old. Applications slow down. Technical debt accumulates. Eventually, every organisation faces a “fork in the road” where a system simply reaches the end of its life.

This happens whether it was built by a specialised agency or cobbled together by “Frank from IT” back before Frank got old and retired to the Bahamas.

When a platform calls time, you need a plan. At Make Do, we’ve managed several “End of Life” (EOL) transitions recently. Here is what we’ve learned about navigating the risks and the commercial reality of legacy systems when providing inherited WordPress website support.

Warning Signs Your System is Failing

The most common sign of a legacy problem is when your site becomes “un-updatable.” We recently encountered a complex WordPress Intranet supporting over 1,000 global staff members. Despite housing 20,000 pieces of content, poor technical decisions meant it couldn’t handle a modern WordPress upgrade.

It was stuck on an outdated version of WordPress, hosted on an aging Microsoft Windows server running an obsolete version of PHP. When you can no longer apply security patches or performance updates, your system isn’t just “old” it’s a liability.

The Commercial Cost of Delay

The “DIY” approach or using off-the-shelf plugins to build complex tools like CRMs or employee onboarding portals is a great way to launch quickly and cheaply.

However, there is often an upper limit to this approach.

The main lesson? Don’t let budget-driven decisions from three years ago dictate your security today.

While we occasionally use off-the-shelf tools to meet a client’s launch budget, we always have a 3-to-5-year strategy to replace those “cobbled-together” systems with something more cohesive. Deferring a rebuild often leads to an impossible challenge later when you try to unpick a tangled web of 35+ plugins.

Planning an Orderly Exit

Replacing a platform requires months of integration and planning, but it’s often easier to start fresh.

By moving from a bloated, legacy builder to a technically-led foundation, you can:

  • Remove the Bloat: Replace 35+ plugins and a heavy page builder with a lean, custom theme and a few utility tools.
  • Modernise Legacy Data: We’ve successfully transformed creaking Excel spreadsheets and Access databases into vibrant, modern web applications.
  • Future-Proof: A system built on a custom, technically sound foundation is designed to last for decades, not just seasons.

Our Promise: Honest Consultancy and Advice

We are a WordPress agency, but we aren’t “WordPress or nothing” zealots. If we find that unpicking your current system is impossible, we’ll tell you even if it means suggesting a platform other than WordPress.

Actually, our team specialises in application development for various systems, which we can then integrate directly with WordPress. The truth is that while WordPress is amazing for building websites and publishing content, it does have an upper limit. We’ve seen exactly what happens when it is overreached and bloated with poor technical code and too many plugins and it never ends well.
