The NHS Leadership Academy exists to develop outstanding leadership across the NHS, directly improving patient care through stronger management and collaboration.
As part of its mission, the organisation hosts a national awards ceremony to recognise individuals who have gone above and beyond in their service.
With thousands of staff members across the UK eligible to apply or be nominated, the awards required a robust digital platform to handle a high volume of complex applications. This is where Make Do was brought in to design and build a bespoke WordPress site capable of supporting the entire submission and review process.
At the core of the platform was a custom-built form system. Each award category required its own tailored application form, complete with specific fields and criteria.
We designed the user experience so that NHS staff could easily select the award they wished to apply for and complete the relevant form without confusion, even when dealing with lengthy and detailed submissions.
The system ensured that thousands of nominations could be collected smoothly and consistently.
Custom CRM Integration, training, workflow and more
The bigger challenge was what happened after the forms were submitted. Each application needed to be reviewed by the correct panel of judges, often segmented by region and award category. To achieve this, we integrated the WordPress platform directly with the NHS Leadership Academy’s internal CRM system. This integration ensured that completed applications were automatically distributed to the right judges, with all associated data securely transferred and organised.
Our work didn’t stop at the technology, we also provided training and onboarding sessions for the Academy’s staff. This allowed them to log in, access the CRM, and manage the applications assigned to them without technical barriers.
By equipping the internal team with the right tools and knowledge, we ensured the system could run smoothly for future awards ceremonies without relying on ongoing development support.
The final solution streamlined the entire process from nomination to judging. Applicants could submit their entries easily, judges could review them efficiently, and the Academy had all the data it needed in one place to organise the ceremony and contact successful candidates.
The result was a digital transformation of the NHS Leadership Academy’s awards process – turning a potentially overwhelming manual task into a structured, user-friendly, and secure system
